Summary and Objective

After viewing and discussing a set of architectural floor plans and pictures, students will understand that rooms have special functions. Students will draw a floor plan of their classroom or school noting the uses of space.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Before the lesson, laminate the five images from the digital collection.

Step 2. Divide the class into five groups. Give each group a room picture/floor plan to discuss and observe. Encourage each group to write two or three observations about the image. Also record questions or comments that were generated during the group discussions.

Step 3. After several minutes, exchange images. Continue to discuss and record observations, comments,or questions until each group has viewed all images.

Step 4. As a general class discussion, have each group hold up their picture/floor plan and briefly summarize their observations. Other classmates may enrich the discussion with their observations. Encourge classmates to try to answer questions posed by other groups.

Step 5. During the discussion of the floor plans, be sure to point out how windows, doors, stairs, chimneys are drawn. Notice how areas/rooms are labled.

Step 6. Ask children to draw a floor plan of their classroom and label the functions of special areas in it. Older children may draw and label the floor plan of the school. Graph paper would be useful. Older students could draw the classroom or school to scale.

Step 7. Note: As an enrichment activity, go to Activities section (bicycle icon) "Exploring New England Architecture" in American Centuries website and engage in interactive activity.
