Summary and Objective

The first goal of this activity will be to provide historical evidence regarding slavery's existence in New England. The second goal will be to provide historical evidence of the strong roots of opposition which existed in New England.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Brainstorm which states had legalized slave trade. This will be done by distributing a simple map of the United States and asking students to color free states and slave trade states in two different colors.

Step 2. An overhead will be utilized to give the accurate answer. Student responses will be encouraged. Emphasis will be placed on the fact that this represents 1619-1785. Students will log onto the American Centuries site (or the projector and one teacher computer could be utilized and visit the three PBS maps (links noted below).

Step 3. Students will then view the local historical documents provided. Specific attention will be paid to the years, language, and illustrations which accompany these documents. It is important to note that the documents should be viewed from the bottom (Bill of Sale) to the top (The Slave Trade).

Step 4. Students will be assigned a journal entry in which they will process their reactions to the documents and the information provided in those documents.

Step 5. Follow up lessons will include readings about Harriet Tubman, the Middle Passage, Amistad, etc.
