Summary and Objective
The goal of this activity is for students to recognize and understand the changes that occurred in American dress during the late 1700's and the 1800's. Students will discuss and analyze these changes and make connections as to how these changes reflected America's growing industrialism and the availability of materials from new world markets.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
In class discussion, students will "brainstorm" as to what men and women wore in 18th and 19th century America.
Step 2.
Direct students to the American Centuries website and click on the "In the Classroom" icon.
Step 3.
Click on the activities icon and then select "Dress Up."
Step 4.
Either individually or teacher directed with a LCD projector have students review men and women's dress in the 1700 and 1800's.
Step 5.
Go to articles of clothing in "My collection" and have students read and discuss information given.
Step 6.
In small groups have students compile lists of differences they observed and then discuss what advances in technology and what new materials had to be available to Americans for these changes to take place.
Step 7.
"Taking it to the Future"-Have students write a short essay on what they think clothing might look like in the next 100 years. Have students project what new materials might be available to create the clothing they've suggested.
