Teaching Plan
Step 1.
The language-based learning disabled students(LLD) will preview vocabulary found in the source documents.
Step 2.
Next, the students will read an excerpt from the diary of Ms. Clara Alquist-Sherman.
Step 3.
Following a brief classroom discussion, students will then read a teacher-selected news story for the corresponding day from the locale in which they reside and/or teach.
Step 4.
Create handout for the students using the following questions: 1) Why didn't Clara Sherman go to church on November 16th, 1934? 2) What work does Ms. Sherman do? 3) List three local news events that happened in your locale on Nov. 16th, 1934. 3) List three national events that occurred on that day. 4) Compare the differences and similarities (or themes) between these items. 5) Examine the ads in your local paper. How do the prices compare with those of today? How sophisticated were these appliances or cars for example?
Step 5.
Following more discussion, students will use a web or a web or a Venn diagram to compare similarities and contrast differences between the accounts of the two sources.
Step 6.
If time permits, the students will begin to write a rough draft for a brief essay on the topic.
