Summary and Objective
Students will understand that the study of geography is subject to the perspective of the author as well as the cultural expectations of the time period. Students will take guided notes about each of the books they examine in the Digital Collection. Then, as a class, students will discuss the changes in the themes of geography that are presented and suggest possible reasons why these changes have taken place.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
Pre-Teach.
Students will need to have background knowledge of how their own geography texts and atlases are organized, and the topics that those books contain.
Step 2.
Hand out a sheet that lists the following questions.
1. What is the focus of this geography book?
2. What content is the same as our geography books?
3. What is different about this book?
4. Is there anything that would not be considered appropriate in today's geography texts? Why?
Step 3.
Students will examine each of the selected works in the Digital Collection taking notes to address the four questions on the handout.
Step 4.
In a class discussion, create a list of generalizations about the perspectives of the people during the 1700's and 1800's. Have the themes of geography changed? Why or why not? Have attitudes towards certain themes or topics changed? Why do you think that change has taken place? Were there any historical events that may have caused that change?
