Summary and Objective
Students will understand that there was a requirement for specific tools to build timber-frame houses in Colonial America. Students will examine Colonial home-building methods by working with information and studying illustrations from the Plimouth Plantation web site. Following this introduction, students will use the "Learning to Look" activity on the American Centuries web site to understand how to best use the necessary web site tools for additional study of the artifacts collected for this lesson. Students will then examine the collected tools, select one of special interest for detailed examination and analysis, and then write a description of its use in homebuilding.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
Students will use the Plimouth Plantation website to view period-specific homebuilding methods and learn about timber frame construction.
Step 2.
The class will then work though the activity "Learning to Look," as this procedure forms the fundamental approach to studying the artifacts in this lesson's collection.
Step 3.
Students will examine the tools in the lesson's collection. After reviewing the collection, each student will choose a tool that is particularly interesting for them. The student will more closely inspect the item using the "Look Closer" icon. Students will use the "Zoom Level," "View Size," and "Navigator" features to thoroughly examine the tool. They will read the labels, take notes on the information available for the tool, and draw a quick sketch in their research journals, labeling the most important parts of the tool.
Step 4.
Students will review the video demonstrations of early American tools on the American Centuries web site. They will watch a carpenter, in period clothing, using various hand tools and learn how these tools are effectively used for specific building purposes.
Step 5.
Students will then describe how their selected tool was used in construction of a home during the Colonial times and write the description in their History journals.
Step 6.
