Summary and Objective

Students will understand that Wampanoag Native Americans in the state of Massachusetts wore different clothing at different periods of time. Students will understand that Native Americans clothing has changed over time and has become modernized by looking at pictures of Wampanoag clothing and sorting them according to the two time periods.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Read "Tapenum's Day A Wampanoag Indian Boy in Pilgrim Times" by Kate Waters

Step 2. Revisit "Tapenum's Day" by Kate Waters and focus on the Native's clothing on page 6,8,9,14,19 and 21 by asking: What is the Wampanoag wearing and what purpose is it serving? Revisit page 14 and discuss the sash and show the students the sash picture from the american centuries website.

Step 3. Take a picture walk through the book called "1621 A New look at Thanksgiving" by Catherine ONeil Grace & Margaret Bruchac. Discuss the clothing that you see appearing in that book on pages 10,13,14,24,30,31,36, and 45.

Step 4. Read "Clambake A Wampanoag Tradition" by Russell Peters.

Step 5. Revisit "Clambake" by Russell Peters and focus on the Native American clothing throughout the entire book.(as each page has some form of modern clothing that you and your family and friends would wear today, stoppping specifically at pages 8,16,24,37 and 45) Ask students: Why are these Wampanoag wearing modernized clothing? Why do you think their clothing changed from the book "Tapenum's Day"?

Step 6. Photocopy the clothing on pages 6,8,9,14,19, and 21 from "Tapenum's Day". Photocopy pages 8,16,24,37, and 45 from "Clambake". Then distribute cards among students and have them correctly place the clothing into the right time period on the blackboard. You could also make a cut and paste activity by doing the same as above but with smaller pictures and have students glue correctly the clothing to the proper time period on a piece of paper folded in half with "Then" on one side and "Now" on the other.

Step 7. For a post lesson look at the Bruchac "1621" for Europeans adults wearing different clothing, and compare to adults in the "Clambake" book, so that students can see everyone's clothing is different today and that we all really wear modern clothing and there is no difference. Another post lesson could be with the books "Sarah Morton's Day" and "Samuel Eaton's Day" and talk about how differently English children are dressed from modern white children.
