Summary and Objective

Students will use primary sources to learn about slavery in the north before the American Revolution. Through these sources, they will learn how slavery existed in the New England colonies and will also learn how it was different than slavery in the south. Students will understand that Slavery existed in the north as well as the south during the Pre-Revolution years.

Teaching Plan

Step 1. Students will have prior knowledge of slavery from the readings they have done in their textbooks.

Step 2. Students will be divided into pairs and instructed on how to use the American Centuries website.

Step 3. Students will then be instructed on how to find the 5 specific primary documents attached to this lesson.

Step 4. Students will work together to read each source. They will look for information such as: What type of evidence is there that slavery existed in the north?, How many slaves would a family have?, What kind of work did the slaves do?, What kind of freedoms and privileges did they have?....

Step 5. Students will finish their readings and then come back to report their findings to the whole class. Their findings will be listed and gathered by the teacher on the board for the whole class to look at and discuss. In the discussion, they will list how slavery in the north was the same and different from slavery in the south.

Step 6. As a culmination of this activity, students will write a comparison paper, comparing slavery in the north and the south.
