Summary and Objective
In this unit, children will understand that many of the games that children play today are games that children have been playing for many years. Students will have a better understanding of how children had to use their imagination and resources to create games. By teaching this we can also encourage children to use their imagination in creating new games or duplicating and learning games that children for hundreds of years have been playing.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
Read - If you lived in Colonial Times
by Ann McGovern
(This may take more than one day to read this book to your class.)
Step 2.
Discuss the similarities and differences of Early American children's lives and the lives of children in the class.
Step 3.
Make a comparison (ex. Venn Diagram) showing games of the children in the story and games of children today.
Step 4.
Show several samples of games and toys used by the children in the late 1600's.
Examples: Buzz Saw, Cat's cradle, Marbles, Rolling hoops, checkerboard, nine- pins and dried apple dolls.
Step 5.
Over the next couple of weeks you could make several of the above games but for today we will be making each child a set of marbles.
Step 6.
By using either store bought clay or the recipe from the website listed below each child will make a set of marbles.
Step 7.
After a couple of days, when the marbles have dried completely, you can teach the students how to play the game of marbles. Directions on how to play marbles are listed below.
