Summary and Objective
The students will understand that many of the toys with which children play today are similar to toys that were used long ago. However, the design, materials, manufacture, and role of toys may have changed over time. Children will look at toys from long ago and corresponding objects from modern times in order to understand their similarities and differences. After using a Venn diagram, children will show the similarities and differences between the like objects of long ago and today.
Teaching Plan
Step 1.
Print out copies of the pictures of nine pins, marbles, checkerboard, rag doll, and bicycle.
Step 2.
Have on display corresponding pictures or objects of modern day bowling pins, marbles, a checkerboard, a rag doll, and a bicycle.
Step 3.
Discuss with children how the long ago item and its modern day equivalent are alike and different. Help children compare old and new by asking questions such as: What are they made of? Where or who made them? How were they made? Who would play with them?
Step 4.
Create a Venn diagram to compare long ago and present day items.
Step 5.
As a follow-up, have children brainstorm other "then and now" toys to compare.
