"S" hooks, made of wrought iron by the local blacksmith, were needed by the fireplace. To cook something with a high heat, several were hooked together with the pot hanging from the bottom one, placing the food close to the fire. To reduce the heat, hooks were removed, placing the food further from the heat of the fire and slowing the cooking. This meant that several dishes could be prepared over the same fire. The hooks were usually suspended from an iron crane or a lug pole.
