Widespread industrialization and mass production at the turn of the 20th century generated concern among many people that traditional technologies and crafts would be lost. This concern fueled the Arts and Crafts movement of the same period, a movement embraced and led by many people in the town of Deerfield, Massachusetts. Deerfield was home to the Deerfield Industries, a cooperative association of craftspeople producing handcrafted, useful objects for the home. Chauncey Thomas made this hand-thrown glazed redware vase around 1910. Thomas lived in Deerfield from 1910-1912 and served as vice-president of the Deerfield Industries.
