In the 1850s, no one had indoor plumbing and potty chairs for children and for adults were common. This example was made for twins, Samuel J. and Betsy Watson, who were born June 3, 1854 in Leverett, Massachusetts. Styled like the wooden side chairs of the mid-19th century, with armrests, the potty chair has a deep skirt to conceal the two potties under the holes in the seat. The potties were made of ceramic or of metal.
