The average enlisted man spent fifty days in camp to one on the battlefield, and spent several hours everyday drilling. This lithograph depicts a Union Army winter encampment at Stony Mountain, Virginia in 1863. While the military was unable to provide adequate housing while on the march or the battlefield, the soldier's housing at this longer term encampment is made of logs, and each has its own stone chimney. In the middle distance, on both sides of the illustration, soldiers are drilling.
