This three-quarter-profile vignette of a man is identified on the reverse as that of Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864). The photographer who copied the earlier image is "Langill" of Hanover, New Hampshire. Mr. Hitchcock was a man of many accomplishments. He served as Headmaster of Deerfield Academy, as pastor of a parish in Conway, Massachusetts, as state geologist for Massachusetts, and was a teacher and the President of Amherst College. He did not find his strong interests in both religion and in science to be a conflict.
