Marked "T. Crafts and Co. Whately 3," this large storage vessel with cover was made of clay brought to Massachusetts by boat from New Jersey. Earthenware objects could be made from local clay and glazed with lead, but for stoneware, which was fired at a higher temperature and glazed with salt, the clay had to come from New York or New Jersey. The stonewares were non-porous and durable, and the salt glaze was more suitable for foodstuffs, especially acid foods, than the lead-glazed earthenware.
