Although this postcard identifies the Old Stone Mill as being in Turners Falls, Massachusetts, in fact it is across the river, in the town of Gill. It is located in Factory Hollow on Falls River. It was not the first mill set up in Gill - that was a saw and grist mill on Woodward's Brook at Gill Center - but this one did survive into the early 20th century and it became a landmark. Perhaps the printer of this postcard chose to place it in Turners Falls as a way to make a contrast to the new and exciting factories of that town, which had been built from scratch in the years just before this picture was taken.
