The Arts and Crafts movement was many things to many people, but above all, it was a movement to make art accessible to everyone. Creative expression such as interior design, decorative arts (pottery, basket making, weaving, etc) needed to reflect the natural world and be compatible with it. Framing a painting was a subject that the Deerfield Arts and Crafts Society came back to several times. Will Hutchins brought in artists and framers to instruct members of the Society and the general public. The frame, it was felt, must harmonize with the painting, separating it from the world around it in the gentlest manner. It must also work with the interior design of the home.
