This substantial brick house was built for William Russell, an executive for the International Paper Company. Russell was born in Sunderland and attended Amherst College, and later worked in New York. In the 1880s he built a second home in Turners Falls, where he and his wife had their only child, Janet (b. 1886). This photograph was one of a series of photographs taken by the Howes Brothers of Turners Falls (they later relocated to Ashfield, Massachusetts). The house was probably chosen as a subject for one of the Howes' series of photographs because of its high style. Located on High Street, then an exclusive street of new houses above Turners Falls, the house represented the height of achievement. <BR> <BR>This photograph comes from the Howes Brothers collection of photographs. The Howes Brothers, based in Ashfield, Massachusetts, made more than 20,000 images of New England rural life from 1890 to around 1910, offering a glimpse into the lives of people rarely visible in history.
