After the second failure of the potato crop in Ireland in 1846, relief efforts began in earnest in the United States. This newspaper reports that substantial amounts of money had been raised in many cities. The amounts in this report add up to $62,300. The $7,000 raised in New Orleans is reported to be spent on provisions, rather than being sent as money. According to one report, over 100 ships carrying 20,000 tons of provisions came from the United States to Ireland for famine relief.
