West Pelham, Massachusetts, was the site of the Orient Springs health resort and the first factory to produce bamboo fly fishing rods in the United States. Orient Springs was the site of mineral springs which drew both local people and visitors wishing to avail themselves of the benefits of this water. In 1861, a large summer hotel was built. This building burned to the ground in February, 1881. In spite of the popularity of the springs, they were never a financial success.
