On February 23, 1774, the present day communities of West Springfield, Agawam, and Holyoke were incorporated as a single town called West Springfield. West Springfield, Massachusetts, was originally a community of farmers. Growing crops intended to be sent to market started in the 1830s and was concentrated in the area of Riverdale Road. The city is also the birthplace of the Morgan Horse, and is the home of the Eastern States Exposition, which is the 6th largest agricultural fair in the country. It was the home of Luke Day, who was a prominent figure in the series of protests that came to be known as Shays' Rebellion.
