This photograph was created by Frances and Mary Allen, of Deerfield, Massachusetts, who were celebrated as among the foremost women photographers in America in the early 20th century. The sisters made a living as photographers in the years 1885 to 1920, and published several catalogs of their prints. This example, "Girl with Dulcimer," was listed in 1914 and 1920. The subject is shown seated by the hearth in the kitchen of the Allen home located on the Deerfield street.
