Mary Allen of Deerfield, Massachusetts, recorded in her diary on September 7, 1913 that "Pageant rehearsals are on- the first group dress rehearsal for photographs was yesterday and the girls in green and yellow for the "Spirit of the Wheat" - they came trotting down the field from the far corner - It's a wearisome distance on the rough turf. The whole slope east of the brook is stage this year. It is too far away to be photographed from the seats, so it must all be done at dress rehearsals."
