Deerfield, Massachusetts, held its second pageant in 1913, and the town called on its most famous local photographers, Frances and Mary Allen, to record the events. This was a part of Episode IV(a), "Indian Attack on Stockwell's Fort," during which the Nipmucks, Wampanoags, and "perhaps the remnant of the Pocumtucks" ambushed the north garrison as it returned from meeting. The men were able to retreat across the field, as depicted here. This historical event was portrayed as accurately as was possible in 1913, but the way it was depicted was heavily influenced by standards of the day. For example, the uniforms of the soldiers and the costumes of the Indians were directly copied from the 1910 Edison Company movie, "Ononko's Vow," filmed in Deerfield.
