The Sunderland Bridge, spanning the Connecticut River seen in this postcard, replaced a steel girder bridge destroyed in the devastating flood of 1936. In contrast to the privately owned old toll bridges (1812-1869) and the steel girder bridge funded by local taxes in 1876, this concrete span was built by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The bridge was located slightly south of the previous crossings. This view was taken from Mount Sugarloaf, a popular excursion destination that afforded a panoramic view of the valley.
