Onions were a crop that the Eastern European immigrants, flooding into the mid-Connecticut River Valley of New England, had experience growing. By the 1920s, newly-arrived immigrants were growing acres of onions on riverside land that local residents had dismissed as overused and unproductive. Cultivating and harvesting onions is extremely labor intensive. These men and a young boy diligently weed and thin these onions to ensure a successful crop.
