Frank O. Wells was a machinist who went on to start a tap and die business in Greenfield, Massachusetts. In 1905 he had the inspiration for The Weldon, which he intended to be used for company suites and residential apartments. It soon became financially expedient to convert the building to overnight lodging. Complete with wicker furniture and fern-filled porches, the all-concrete hotel soon became one of the most appealing and most expensive hotels in the region.
