English artisans placed transfer-printed images of popular heroes, such as Lafayette and Franklin, on their pottery to appeal to an American market. The Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) made a triumphal tour of the United States in 1824 when he visited the tomb of American statesman Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790). Franklin was enormously popular in France and played a critical role in securing the French alliance during the American Revolution.
