Edward Swan's Pickle Works on the Elm Street

Edward Swan built this pickle house in July of 1896 on Elm Street in South Deerfield, Massachusetts and operated it until at least 1926. Swan came to South Deerfield with his parents in 1882. One biographical profile celebrated his rise as a self-made man. He was educated in public schools with only one post-secondary business course and began his company at the age of 23. Partly through his efforts, South Deerfield became something of a pickle manufacturing center in the early 1900s. The same year Swan's plant opened, Alvord Jewett opened a pickle factory in South Deerfield just a short distance north of Swan's. Swan's plant closed sometime after 1930, but Jewett's prospered. After the tragic death of both Delmar Jewett, Sr.(1871-1951) and his son, Delmer, Jr., in a 1951 plane crash, the plant was purchased by the Cains family.
