The House atop Mt. Sugarloaf in Deerfield, Massachusetts,was built in 1864, during the last years of the Civil War. In 1908 the original structure was enlarged and surrounded by a large porch. The house boasted expansive views in all directions and attracted middle-class Americans with new-found leisure time. As was fashionable and believed to be important for one's health, these individuals were drawn to speanding time outdoors, enjoying fresh air and scenic vistas.
