Though Mt. Sugarloaf is in South Deerfield, the land in the foreground of this picture is in Hatfield, Massachusetts. The foliage covering the ground is broad-leaf tobacco, a bumper crop raised on many farms in Hatfield and neighboring Hadley. Irish, German and French Canadian immigrants, drawn to work building the railroads in the state set up as farmers in Hatfield, as did later arrivals from Poland, Austria and Czechoslovakia. Initially they raised wheat but by 1905 Hatfield farmers were the leading tobacco and onion producers in the state.
