Before arriving in Deerfield, Joseph Goodhue (1762-1949) served as a surgeon in the United States Navy in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The letter writer appears to be considering a position as surgeon's mate in Portsmouth and inquires of Dr. Goodhue about the conditions there before he makes up his mind.
