General John Burgoyne's plan to end the American rebellion by launching an invasion from Canada ended in defeat at Saratoga, New York. Burgoyne surrendered his entire army of 5,000 men and his colors to General Horatio Gates on October 17, 1777. Colonel Hugh Maxwell of Charlemont, Massachusetts, was at Saratoga and took home with him a memento of his presence at this turning point of the American Revolution: a small piece of one of Burgoyne's silk flags.
