On September 19, 1677 the settlement of Hatfield, Massachusetts, a town south of Deerfield, was attacked by Pocumtuck and Norwottuck Native Americans. The Native Americans had removed to a Native village two or three miles from Sorel, a French town in Canada. Sorel is located within twelve miles of Odanak (St. Francis) in Quebec. They took a number of Hatfield residents prisoner and carried them to Canada. These were the first English captives taken there. The captives were redeemed the following May. This shoe was, according to family tradition, worn home by one of the captives, four-year-old Sarah Coleman.
