George Fuller (1822-1884) was the most famous of the prominent Fuller family of artists that lived and worked in Deerfield, Massachusetts. This painting is an idealized view of a bend of the Deerfield River near the family's home of The Bars in Deerfield, Massachusetts. By the 1850s, when this was painted, the river had been channeled by a dam. Some of its water fed a small canal that swung just north of The Bars and powered the grist mill seen here. Hinted at in this painting is the road that crossed the river just in front of the mill. Fuller had left Deerfield in the 1840s to earn his living as a portrait painter. By the 1850s he was living in New York City, New York, but evidence from his sketchbook points to his having spent some his summers in Deerfield, including 1858, when this was painted. When his father died in 1859, Fuller came home to run the family's farm; he remained there for the rest of his life.
