Hymn singing was a common component of early 19th century church services. This hymn, "Amsterdam", was popular in Britain and America in the 18th and 19th centuries. The text typifies the Calvinist belief that man is born sinful and only God can provide salvation and raise him to a higher plane of existence. In the meantime, he should strive to lead a godly life despite his inherently sinful nature.
