Made specifically to protect eggs during shipment, this box is dated "1881." Owned by E. A. Robinson of Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, the information stenciled on the box names the "Ashfield (Massachusetts) Stage." Family tradition tells us that the crate was used to ship eggs from the Robinson farm in Shelburne Falls to Boston in the 1880s. Much of the food for Boston households was supplied by the farms in western Massachusetts.
