This fireboard is from the Ryther house in Bernardston, Massachusetts, is attributed to Jared Jessup. Fireboards customarily covered a fireplace opening during the warm months when fires were unnecessary. The artist painted this fireboard to match a painted vase of flowers on the Ryther house parlor wall. Above the fireplace in the parlor is a harbor scene reminiscent of the overmantel panel from the nearby Burke Tavern in Bernardston.
