In his twenty-one year career as a pewterer, Samuel Danforth, b. 1774, used a total of ten dies to mark his pewter. This porringer is clearly marked with "S" "D" and an eagle. Working in Hartford, Connecticut, from 1795 until his death in 1816, Mr. Danforth was the most productive and inventive craftsman of his generation. The "flowered" handle seen here was inspired by New York examples with two extra dots at the base.
