When traveling, men used leather pocket books like this one owned by John Burke (1717-1784) to hold money or small personal articles. Like many Americans of his generation, Major John Burke fought with the English in the French and Indian War (1757-1763), also known as the Seven Years War. This conflict was the final act in the ongoing struggle between England and France over the possession of the North American continent. France's defeat in 1763 opened a new phase in colonial politics that ultimately lost England its thirteen American colonies.
