Deerfield, Massachusetts, photographers, Mary and Frances Allen, took this picture of the Root family playing croquet on the lawn about 1895. It was customary in the early years of photography and even into the 1920s, to feature the family house, family members, and their most important possessions. In this late-19th century family scene, the four-wheel coach is shown drawn up at the back of the house. The two children play croquet while eight adults look on. First played in Ireland in the 1840s, croquet was a popular outdoor lawn game for families and groups who had the luxury of grassy lawns around their homes.
