The recipient of the letter, Emily Gladys Bartlett (1891-1968), lived in Holyoke, Massachusetts, during the time of World War I. Her fiance, Edward Roswell Wirt (1891-1942), a native of Lowell, Massachusetts, served in the army during the last year of the war in 1918. He wrote her a series of letters between April 29, 1918 to April 10, 1919, telling of his experiences as a soldier and suggesting that she save the letters so that he can refer to them "as a diary of this affair."

There are ninety letters from Mr. Wirt to Miss Bartlett in the PVMA collection; twelve of them are reproduced here.
