During the Victorian era the use of silk, satin, and velvet became popular for pieced quilts, referred to as "crazy" quilts, the fragile nature of the fabrics required that they be stitched onto a sturdier background fabric. Some are truly wild with sumptuous silks and a wide range of embroidery binding them together. This example shows an innovative touch - a border made of netting - and may have been used, as most "crazy" quilts were, more as a parlor decoration than as a bed covering.
