The events known as Shays' Rebellion swept western Massachusetts from 1786 through 1787. In Franklin County, Deerfield was a center of anti-Shays, pro-government sentiment. When order was regained in early 1787, guns of the participants were confiscated. This receipt records that eleven such guns were taken from their owners by Theodore Barnard and turned in to Mr. King in Northampton. It is signed by David Hoit (Hoyt), Jr. (1757-1803), a surveyor and farmer of Deerfield.
