Although the battery was invented in 1800, the battery-powered hearing aid was not available, and this ear trumpet, or horn, was the choice for people whose hearing was failing. This example was probably given to Lucy Andrews of Deerfield, Massachusetts, by Mary Allen of that town. Miss Allen began using a battery-operated amplification system for her deafness sometime in the 1920s and passed this on to her neighbor.
