The owner of this farm in Spencer makes a point of saying that he will accept public securities as part of the payment. By 1785, hard money was very difficult to come by and many people did not want to accept securities as payment for anything. The advertiser states that 40 dollars must be paid as a downpayment, but he fails to include the actual price for the farm.
