Frances and Mary Allen of Deerfield, Massachusetts, photographed this winter scene. Sleighing was considered one of winter's greatest pleasures in the 19th century as sleighs were used for both transportation and recreation. The snow conditions were critical in determining when and if it was a good day to go sleighing. Bundling under a warm fur lap robe kept the riders warm.
