This uniform coat was worn by Brigadier General Frederick E. Pierce (1862-1953) of the Second Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. Pierce joined Company L of the 2nd Massachusetts in 1886, just after the company was formed in Greenfield, Massachusetts. The company saw service in the Spanish-American War (1898-99), and in 1911 Pierce was elected Brigadier General, the rank displayed on this coat; soon after, he retired after 25 years service at the rank of Major General. In 1911, the style of the coat had changed little from when it first was used by the U.S. Army some seventy years before. Pierce's career in Greenfield carried on for fifty more years after his retirement, including service in town government, social and charity work, and service as a Republican state legislator that ended in 1948.
