Lieutenant Thomas Ashley of Deerfield, Massachusetts, posed for this photograph shortly after enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. Thomas Ashley was the first Deerfield man to die in World War I when he fell at Chateau Thierry, France in 1918. At a ceremony in 1923 dedicating an honor roll of all Deerfield's servicemen, a speaker called Thomas Ashley "the best known and best loved of all Deerfield's boys."
